Arpil 4, 2008, from Clayon's foster mom: Clayton is back home after his heartworm treatment and doing very well. He doesn’t seem in much pain at all and he really wants his treats. That little curmudgeon actually made friends at the vet clinic! The woman who brought him out to me was kissing his little head and his tail was wagging big time. She said that he had been giving her kisses all day – a total stranger! He wanted more love from me last night, and marked his favorite spots in the living room, so I know he is feeling okay.
The next step is to get him neutered. We have to wait 2 weeks after his final oral heartworm treatment.

March 24, 2008: Clayton goes in for heartworm treatment tomorrow! He is doing very well, not hardly growling at anyone anymore. He must be feeling better... He still has some potty training issues. He will not go in the crate, but as soon as he is let out, he starts lifting his leg everywhere! Foster mom has tried a belly band but he soaks right through it! We're still trying...

FEBRUARY 28, 2008: The little guy is coming along! He’s not really trembling anymore so we think we have relieved his pain, which were probably caused by his eye problems. He’s very good with his foster mom now – he lets her pet him all over, she can touch and clean his eyes and ears, put in his eyedrops, and can pick him up with no growling! She can even kiss his head and snuggle him when she picks him up! He still growls at strangers but he’s not too bad. We will start to gradually introduce him to more people. He is still having house training issues, but we are working on it.
In about a week, we will have him re-tested to check his liver enzymes. Two enzymes were very high and the vet thinks it’s probably related to some toxins that he consumed when he was straying. She wants to make sure they are at least on the decline before we start heartworm treatment.

FEBRUARY 14, 2008: Clayton saw the eye vet specialist this morning and, surprise-surprise, he is blind. There is zero chance he will ever see again, so all we can do is make him comfortable. She thinks that he has been in a great deal of pain for quite awhile because of the condition of his eyes. She cleaned him up, which entailed doing a lot of different things to his eyes, but suffice it to say that it probably all made him feel better. She also gave him a shot of something to calm him down and he was pretty good.
She sent him home with Clavomax, eye meds and pain medication. It’s hard to tell where all his fear aggression is coming from, but she thinks it could have a lot to do with the chronic pain that he’s been in. He will need to be on eye meds the rest of his life, so that coupled with his blindness truly makes him a “special needs” case.

FEBRUARY 11, 2008: It’s mixed news about Clayton’s blood work. He is heartworm positive. Two of his liver enzymes and his blood sugar are elevated. The vet thinks we should wait at least a month before starting heartworm treatment to see if he calms down a bit. She said his heart and lungs sounded strong, so he’s not in any distress right now. She also would like to see if his liver enzymes come down before starting treatment. She thinks that the most likely reason that the enzymes are elevated is that he got into some toxin while straying around town. If that is the case, they should come down over the next month. She doesn’t think it’s an inflammatory issue because she couldn’t feel his liver when she examined him.
On a positive note, his thyroid, red & white blood cell count and kidneys were all good!
We will keep working on his behavorial issues and see if he comes around.
